Michael Boulware Moore is President and CEO of the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina, where he is leveraging his leadership and business experience — along with his passion for African American history — in service of creating what will become one of the most powerful historical sites in America. Located on the spot where the most enslaved Africans entered the United States, the museum is scheduled to open in 2020 as an innovative, informative, and emotionally powerful experience for all.

Prior to his leadership of IAAM, Michael’s dynamic career driving growth and innovation at consumer marketing companies included managing the iconic Jell-O and Coca-Coca brands. He also led marketing at one of the hottest youth apparel brands of the ‘90s before founding a boutique strategy consulting firm, as well as led an innovative software technology company and a specialty food company through critical transitions. Michael is author of the strategy book Bridging the Gaps – The Love of Marketing: Inside the Heart and Mind of the Consumer.

Michael is the great-great-grandson of Robert Smalls, an enslaved African who commandeered a Confederate ship in Charleston Harbor, sailed it past five Confederate forts to Union forces, winning freedom for his family and crew. Smalls went on to become a military and political leader.

Michael earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the Maxwell School of Government at Syracuse University and an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
